Modern Blocks QAL Block 5: Escalator

This months Modern QAL block is the Escalator block and let me tell you, pins were my friend with this block.

Matching points is a key to getting this block together neatly. All I can say is make sure you nest your seams and pin, pin, pin!

And it wouldn’t hurt to take a snap of your layout before you start sewing. I refered to my photo a fair bit whilst piecing.

Cate is sharing the step by steps over at Life Behind the Purple Door, so pop on over there to check out how she put her block together and then pop back here later tonight to link your block and check out this months prize!

  2. I am still new-ish to the quilting thing and I was curious why we don’t cut all of the blocks to be 2.5″, instead of 2.5 and 2.875. What are we supposed to do with the extra .375 when we are stitching them together? Center the 2.5″ on the 2.875″ and have extra on top and bottom or maybe align all of the pieces to the top or bottom? Help!?!?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice on the construction of this block…

    • Hi Erin,

The different measurements are to do with cutting on the diagonal. And the way that most of us girls here at ASWC pieced them was aligning the top edge with the square so the corners match.
I’ll see if I snapped a photo of the edges when I pieced it so you can get a visual. But I didn’t find any extra at all when sewing. I had pretty consistent 1/4 inch seams all the way through.

  3. Is this being posted for September or is it October’s block. As I’ve done this block I’m a little confused.
