Cinderella dress-ups

Ah, school dress-up day, that beloved day when crafty mamas all over town sigh and groan and bite their tongue before saying “I know you want it that way but can we do this instead?” Which is how I found myself spending $65 on satin and organza and bridal tulle (shhh, don’t tell Mr Barefoot, he’s of the “can’t you buy one at BigW for $10?” persuasion).

But my girl wanted Cinderella, so I made her Cinderella. Via Pinterest, I found this great pattern from Made For Mermaids, that was the right size (5) and price (freeeeee). Of course, the true cost was my sanity as I wrestled with multiple layers of tulle and organza and lining to get the darn thing assembled. I think it was worth it in the end though.

I especially love how easy the base pattern would be to convert to any princess. For instance, the original pattern was based on the 2015 Cinderella movie, not the Disney cartoon, but that was easily solved with side swoops and an organza drop. An overskirt of ruffles and a change in colour to yellow and it would work as Belle. Make it in pink for Sleeping Beauty. A green split overskirt for Tiana. Lots of options! I’m definitely keeping this pattern in my arsenal - as you can see, it’s a generous fit on my princess-loving five year old, so I can see lots of variations in my future…
