Practice your Quilting

charm placemats tutorial

Quilting takes practice. But you don’t want to be practicing - and potentially making mistakes - on your precious baby quilt intended for your friend’s new baby. So here are some smaller projects that you can practice your quilting on.

Cushions

Cushions can be as simple or as fancy as you like. They can be an opportunity to try a new patchwork block or see how fabrics will look together in preparation for a quilt. The quilting on a small cushion cover is much easier to manipulate under a sewing machine than a larger quilt, and you can practice designs for a larger project.

This cushion from What Katie Does is a great example.

Coasters

Coasters are an easy small project to practice quilting patterns on and they can use up leftover bits of fabric as well. On these coasters I did a square spiral pattern.

Table Runners

Table runners are another great way to practice both your patchwork piecing and your quilting. You could even take a part of a quilt design and create a runner. This one comes out at Christmas time at our place, and one year I made similar ones as gifts for friends.

Other Ideas:

  • fabric panels
  • bags
  • book covers
  • placemats
  • pot mitts
  • mug rugs (like large coasters)
  • wall hangings
