It’s no secret that I love to make quilts. From choosing the fabrics, to designing a quilt top, I love the whole process.
Sometimes though, it’s nice to just make something small in order to learn or refresh skills. For me, the skill which I need to polish is needle turn applique. In general, I’m a person who likes fast finishes, so when I applique, it’s usually raw edges, on my sewing machine. It’s fast with instant gratification.
Needle turn applique, isn’t so quick. It’s meant to take a little longer. To be able to clear the mind and enjoy the process of playing with needle, thread and beautiful fabrics.
I’m working on a dolly size quilt called Spring, from Sarah Fielke’s book “Quilting from little things…”
It’s a fun project which (I am hoping) will sharpen my skills.
Do you use applique on your projects and quilts?
Which method do you prefer?

I’ve never tried needle turn applique. But it is one of the many things on my to try list.
Can’t wait to see how you go.

I have tried every method of applique and I still have mastered any one of them. I do like the back basting method which doesn’t require any prep work, so if it’s a last minute project that I want to grab and go, then that’s the method I use. I’m also a fan of the freezer paper and starch method which does require prep work, but the rest of the process is much easier and the results are beautiful. Good luck on your applique journey!
