Miss A had a ‘Bird Themed Craft Party’ (her words) in May. I had told her about a fun art activity my class did when they visited GOMA in Brisbane last year, and she remembered it and thought it would be fun to do with her friends. She was right!
I thought I would show you how we put together craft for eight little girls that was simple, fun and something they could bring home THAT day…
Firstly, I shopped…
Cardboard, glue, scissors, googley eyes, pom poms, feathers, foam shapes, pipe-cleaners and some other cute sparkly bits and bobs.
I cut out bird shapes by folding cardboard in half and then cutting semi-circles that had a slight point at each end. We put all the bits and bobs into these cute little containers (which are coming in very handy - remember the Eton Mess?).
The best thing I could have done, was to buy these white plastic table cloths for $1 from Big W. They saved the table from glue and scissors and pens, and at the end of the party, I simply rolled up all the rubbish and tossed them out!
We had noodle boxes to put the birds in, and a big bowl of shredded paper for the birds’ nests.
I gave the girls a tiny explanation about what was what and how to use the shredder and some house rules about glue and scissors, then it was GAME ON! Wow - there were some really creative things happening!
Here are some of the creations the girls made… I loved the way they decorated the noodle boxes to look like bird houses!

The girls created and crafted for a solid 45 minutes, some then drifted back outside to jump on the trampoline or to the party food table.
By the time everyone left, this is what remained… Looks worse than it was! I sorted everything out and then popped things into zip-lock bags. I could then roll up the table-cloths and in a jiffy the table was clear. A run through with the vacuum cleaner and it was back to normal! Yay!
AND - I have a very easy rainy day craft ready to go in a jiffy with all the left over bits and pieces!
If you don’t have a paper shredder for the nests, don’t be dismayed. I snaffled this manual paper shredder from Woolworths for under $10. It has been great for not only shredding old paper work, but also for different crafts!
And… there you have it. A really fun little activity that although takes a bit of time setting up, was really fun!
As for the food part of the party - we decided to go Gluten Free.
My little girl turned 8, I think she is going to want to have a craft party EVERY year from now on!
