My kids are about to go back to school but I know other kids are about to start holidays so here’s a quick collection of my top 5 ‘crafty’ ways to amuse the kids.

1. Lego is my ultimate favourite crafty activity in the holidays. My kids can spend hours building cool vehicles or whole cities in the living room.
Tip: Spread a blanket and tip out the Lego on top for them to play. When they are finished, gather the edges of the blanket and pour the pieces back into the box.

2. Obstacle Course - Get the kids active while still warm inside with an obstacle course down the hallway or around the living room.
Tip: Once it is set up, you can have challenges: Who can do it the fastest? How many times can you do it in 2 minutes?

3. Scrapbooking - Start the kids keeping a record of their holidays. A simple notebook will be enough to write or draw in each day. If you are going away, take pictures and keep brochures of the places you visit. If you’re staying home, pick a theme to write about each day - perhaps their favourite activity each day or something they are thankful for.
Tip: Encourage older children to help younger children with this activity. It could be a nice way to finish each day after dinner.
4. Craft Kits - There are lots of kits around for kids from general craft supplies to complete kits to build or decorate particular items. Match the kit to the child’s age, abilities and interests. One kit might only take a rainy afternoon or be something they work on a little each day. Have a designated area to work on their project and leave it safely if it takes a few days.
Tip: If your kit involves threads or ribbons, this post gives you an easy inexpensive way to store them on a card: Organising Threads

5. Scavenger Hunts - My kids love clues and puzzles so why not combine that love with searching for things? They don’t have to be new or valuable things - it is the thrill of the chase that they find exciting. This requires a little more planning on your part but it is well worth it.
Tip: These clues were written for an Easter Scavenger Hunt, but they could easily be adjusted to your home and another theme by changing some of the words: Easter Egg Hunt Clues
Enjoy the holidays! What kind of things have you got planned?

I should have seen this post at the start of the school holidays! Although my girls have had a ball with a massive roll of plain paper for drawing and painting - $7.99 from IKEA!
