There have been a number of questions about the CrochetAlong so I thought I’d have a quick Question and Answer session sharing these with others who may not have had a chance to ask yet.
Q: Are beginners welcome?
A: Yes!! I’m deliberately keeping the project simple so that even people who haven’t done much crochet can join in.
Q: What difference does the size of the hook make? I’ve been using a 3.5 on 8 ply yarn, but you suggest a 4.5 or 5 in your post.
A: You get smaller stitches with a smaller hook and sometimes it is easier with a slightly larger hook and larger looser stitches. But if you’re comfortable with the hook you’ve been using, that’s all that matters.
Q: I’ve never heard of a size 4.5 hook! Is that the same as my size E hook?
A: Unfortunately hook sizes are named differently in different countries. There are 3 main naming systems: Metric, US and UK. Some hooks will have more than one size on them to try to cover all or some of these systems. The sizes in my post are metric sizes. Here are the equivalents in the other systems:
See a full conversion chart at Karp Styles.
Q: My yarn is called “Bulky” - will that be ok?
A: Yarns are also labelled differently in different countries. I’m in Australia so my “8ply” yarn is called “Double Knitting” in the UK and “Light Worsted” in the US.
Karp Styles also has a conversion chart for yarns on their site.
Do you have more questions?
Please ask and I’ll add them to this post for everyone. Don’t be shy - no question is a silly question!

I almost always use a 4mm with 8ply/DK yarn, but recently switched to a 6mm to make a couple of quick beanies!

exciting! picked up some wool today! looking forward to it 🙂
I have been crocheting for about a month now. I learned to hold the yarn in my left hand by threading it back and forth through the fingers and my pointer sticks out straight. This gets to ache after awhile, and I notice that you hold your quite differently - looks more relaxed and comfortable. I have tried to copy put not getting it. Would you please tell me how to hold the yarn in left hand like you do? Thanks so much!
Today is my first day of crocheting! After a few rows of double stitch my project gets smaller and smaller working its way into a circle. It feel like I am keeping it pretty loose but I have torn it out3 times already and it keeps happening. What am I doing wrong? Also, is it necessary to roll the yarn into a ball?
