{Crafter Interview} Kate of Kate Made It

Today we are interviewing Kate of Kate Made It

When did you start crafting?
- My mum taught me how to knit when I was about 10. I only ever knew how to knit and purl on straight needles and I always got mum to cast on and off. Then about 8 years ago a friend taught me how to crochet a granny square. I was intrigued and with the help of you tube and various books I taught myself the rest!
Aside from my crochet addiction I love to try other crafts too. Cross stitch, embroidery and weaving to name a few!

If you could only pick one craft to do for the rest of your life, what would it be?
- Definitely crochet. I cant seem to stop and now take a wip with me most places I go.

What is your crafting “style”?
- I would describe my crafting as modern but colourful. I dont often buy neutral coloured yarn and I love experimenting with new styles and combinations of stitches.

What is the main source of inspiration?
- Instagram and Pinterest are my treasure troves of inspiration and often find myself late at night scrolling through different feeds and hashtags.

What is the best advice someone gave you about crafting?
- My husband always reminds me to not second guess myself. Even if I dislike a project half way through, I had a vision in mind when I started so power through the doubt.

What tips would you give a beginner?
- Dont give up. With crochet the hardest part is working out how to hold the hook and yarn. Once your hands are comfortable the rest flows from there. Not only the stitches but the ability to see projects come to life and imagine colour schemes will flow aswell.

What is your must have crafting tool?
- A comfy crochet hook set (clover amour hooks are my favs).

Where do you craft? Dining table, own dedicated craft space?
- I have my spot on the couch. On the chaise so there is lots of space to have my wip laid out next to me.

How many WIPs do you have on the go right now?
- I have 7 blankets on the go at the moment! Plus at least 3 more projects in my brain waiting for a wip basket to free up! I store my wips in baskets that fit handily in my ikea shelving and as a way of limiting my wips, they must fit in these baskets!

What would be on your crafty bucket list
- I want to learn some tunisian crochet stitches. And after doing a botanical yarn dyeing workshop, im really eager to do some botanical yarn dyeing at home.
I’ve actually written a 2016 crochet wish list on my blog.

Do you listen to music when you craft?
- I tend to either watch my son run around the house or tv/movies at night on the couch. Often with a glass of wine!

Tea or Coffee – which do you prefer?
- Love them both but prefer coffee.

Favourite TV show?
- Favourite ever is Hart of dixie. Favourite at the moment is Friday Night Lights.

What non-crafting related item can’t you live without? Why?
- Sadly my phone. I am constantly taking photos of my sons and to save my good camera getting smashed by my 2 year old, they are always taken on my phone.

Do you have any news that you would like to share with our readers?
- Now that my second son is a couple of months old, I will be selling my crochet makes in my Etsy store within the next few months.
