Quilting can appear daunting to a first timer. But really it’s not that scary. Here are some tips that we have gathered for you along the way.
These tips are from all of us here at And Sew We Craft. For more tips don’t forget to check out our quilter interviews series that we are running.
- Measure twice, cut once!
- Store your self healing cutting mat flat and don’t leave it in your hot car
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions- The online quilting community is a wonderful place. Most, if not all quilters will be happy to help you
- Don’t be afraid to try something new.
- Read patterns thoroughly before starting to cut. You don’t want to get frustrated half way through the cutting instructions because you misread the instructions
- Have all supplies within reach when you begin as task
- Start small, don’t think you have to make a quilt big enough for a bed on your first attempt. Try your hand at a wall hanging or a lap or baby quilt
- Use precuts to your advantage. If all the precise cutting scares you- a charm square quilt is an easy first step.
- If there are lessons available in your area, try to get along so some. There are also some great online classes these days too.
- Don’t rush- consistent seams are the key. Not a speedy finish.
- use a rotary cutter and mat
- make sure your seams are 1/4″ and all the same
- press as you go; clip threads as you go
- clean the fluff out of your machine regularly
- change your machine needle at the end of every quilt
- mark 1/4″ with blue tape, so you’re not always looking for that etched line - and measure it from the needle, it’s not as wide as you think!
And finally, don’t get discouraged!
