Quilt Tips: A Pinning Trick

I’ve been joining in a free class over at Craftsy called the Block of the Month for 2013. I’m learning lots and enjoying the idea of creating a block each month without the pressure of doing the whole quilt. I can’t wait to start our Modern Blocks Quilt Along here at And Sew We Craft and create another quilt bit by bit. The Craftsy BOM includes video tutorials for each block and I’m learning plenty of little tricks as I go along. Here’s one I learnt last week.

Pinning Trick for Patchwork

When you are pinning pieces together for patchwork piecing, especially curved or fancy cut pieces that you really want to be 100% accurately stitched, try this with your pins. Instead of just putting the pin through the fabric and back up again, try weaving the pin through the fabric an extra time. You can see what I mean in the picture above. This will help to stop the pieces twisting out of alignment as you are stitching them.

I was piecing the April block which was my first ever attempt at curved piecing and this pinning really helped. Here’s my black nearly finished.
