So if you’ve been following along with this crochet for beginners series you would now have all the skills and knowledge to make a nice simple Granny Stripe Blanket.
Granny stripes crochet up quickly and easily and look great. In the one pictured above I am using leftover yarn from my Rainbow Circle blanket, with one exception, I had to sub in a different yellow as I was all out.
For a granny stripe blanket all you need to do it chain the required chains to being your blanket in multiples of 3 + 2. The 2 is to allow for the height of the first row of sc (US) or dc (UK). For the above blanket I chained 155 (153+2) I used a 5mm hook for my foundation chain and then switched to my 4mm needle for the rest of the blanket.
So after you’ve chained the required amount and done your first row of SC (US term) then you start working you rows of DC clusters (just like in the granny square).
Chain desired amount
Row 1: SC into every chain
Row 2: Turn your blanket because we are going back to the beginning, Ch 3 and then work 1dc into the first stitch. *Skip 2 stitched, then work 3 dc’s (a dc cluster) into the next stitch*.
Repeat the pattern between ** until you have 3 stitches left, skip 2 stitches, then work 2dc’s into last stitch on row.
This row should have begun and ended with 2dc’s. Turn.
Row 3: For this row you will be working into the spaces between the 3 dc’s/dc clusters.
Chain 3 then work 3dc;s into the 1st space between each dc cluster and continue to work into each space from the previous row. When you get to the end work 1 dc into the top of the ch3 from the start of the previous row. (see picture)
At the end of row 3 I changed colours. So if you wish to do that tie off here and change colours.
Repeat the above pattern until you blanket is the desired size.

Oh I quite fancy doing this, I’m off to check out my stash and see what I can use up making it, and it might be a way to incorporate a particular crochet stitch (can’t remember the name of it just know how to do it) I’ve seen recently and fancied making something with too - Chris 😀
