First I want to thank Amy and And Sew We Craft for allowing me to take part in this interview.
My name is Kam, and I am the mother of 3, spirited children (that should be read as 3 overly excited, sometimes bad, intelligent kids, lol.) I am also a self proclaimed geek and craft lover. When I am not crafting I enjoy reading comic books, playing video games on occasion, and watching TV with my husband of just about 12 years. Aside from my full-time job as a mother, I also work in the medical field as a Medical Assistant and transcriptionist. Now on to the questions….
When did you start crafting?
I don’t remember exactly how old I was when I started crafting, however I remember in junior high school taking Home Economics, that class taught me so much and made me want to learn more about sewing. From there I started sewing more, as well as scrapbooking.
If you could only pick one craft to do for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I think I would choose sewing. It is so versatile, you can make anything from clothes to bags, to diapers, pillows, etc.
What is your crafting “style”?
Style-ummmm I am not sure I have a style. I pretty much will try anything at least once. I suppose you could say I am eclectic.
What is the main source of inspiration?
My main source of inspiration is my children. They are the main focus on my scrapbook pages, they are the reason I have entirely too many Rainbow Loom bands and creations around my house, and every year I dedicate weeks to perfecting costumes for their school play.
What is the best advice someone gave you about crafting?
My advice would be don’t say, “I am not crafty.” Just give it a try, because honestly I would have said years ago that I was not crafty but once I got over the fear of a project I realized that you are as crafty as you allow yourself to be.
What tips would you give a beginner?
Make sure that you take the time to research what tools you need for your craft. Don’t beat yourself up if your “Pinterest” project turns out to be an epic fail. Get yourself a good pair of scissors and don’t let anyone else touch them.
What is your must have crafting tool?
A crochet hook – I know that sounds funny but, honestly I use my crochet hook for everything. I use it to help turn work right side out, I use it to crochet, to make loom band creatures, to help get a knot out of a shoe lace someone tied too tight, literally everything!
Where do you craft? Dining table, own dedicated craft space?
I have bits and pieces of most of my work in every room in the house. I have a room which is called the “Office” or “Mommy’s playroom” that is designed mainly for my supplies, sewing machine, and fabric stash storage. I do a lot of my work in that room but I also have yarn in the living room next to where I sit and up in my bedroom as well.
How many WIPs do you have on the go right now?
At the moment I have 5 WIPs, with a bunch of things in my head. I am currently working the costumes for the school play, but have a bunch of knitting projects going to right now.
What would be on your crafty bucket list
Making a full size quilt, someday I will get there but right now I just don’t have the equipment or time.
Do you listen to music when you craft?
Sometimes, or I watch TV at the same time.
Tea or Coffee – which do you prefer?
Coffee, no question
Favourite TV show?
Do I have to pick one? Game of Thrones is pretty high up there, I also love Downton, The Walking Dead, Scream Queens, Izombie, and Chicago Med.
What non-crafting related item can’t you live without? Why?
My Keurig, and laptop. I am addicted to coffee, as in a true addiction so the Keurig makes it super easy to keep that coffee pipeline going. My laptop is my lifeline, because it is what I use to create and design things, as well as find patterns and inspiration.
Do you have any news that you would like to share with our readers?
I would love to share my Etsy Shop with your readers – https://www.etsy.com/shop/KuteKrafts
At the moment there are a ton of items listed but once the play is finished I plan to start working on filling my store and getting ready for craft shows come the fall.
Thank you so much for taking time to read about my obsession with crafts and me.
